Cab Drivers United/AFSCME issued the following statement following the violent murder of veteran cab driver Kamil Shamji.

“We are heartbroken over the loss of Kamil Shamji, and offer our deepest condolences to Mr. Shamji’s friends and family.

CHICAGO – Cab Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500 released the following statement in response to the horrific shootings in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where an Uber driver picked up fares in between shooting eight people, killing six.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims of this senseless crime.  The horrific murders in Kalamazoo are devastating not only to those directly affected by these senseless murders, but communities across the nation. 

Which E-Hail Apps did the city select?

The city selected two apps: Curb and Arro

Can I use both apps or do I have to pick one?

Drivers can register for both apps. Currently neither company can dispatch rides to 100% of the cabs on the road, but both are working with affiliations to allow drivers to receive e-hail dispatches.

How much will the apps charge and how will I get paid?

Cab Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500 member Bayo Aladesuru drives a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) and recently received a “blue ticket” after being accused of unsafe driving.

After receiving the ticket, Bayo called Cab Drivers United/ AFSCME Local 2500, said he was a member, and needed help.

A trained Cab Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500 Driver Advocate met with Bayo to get the details of his case, and help him take his case to a hearing.

The devastating impact of the city’s double standard for taxis and TNPs/Uber affects every driver on the road, but owner operators face specific problems. CDU/AFSCME members are working together to find solutions. A group of owner-operator CDU members met earlier this month to identify what long- term and short-term changes might provide a lifeline in hard times while building for the bigger reforms needed to allow for fair competition.

CHICAGO – Cab Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500 released the following statement in response to city’s announcement that services like Uber and Lyft are now legally allowed to pickup passengers from O’Hare, Midway and McCormick Place.

“The Mayor’s rush to give Uber keys to the airport is outrageous. By this action, the Mayor is giving part-time jobs the priority over  supporting professional, full-time work, decimating Chicago cab drivers’ ability to provide for their family.

Twenty two Chicago signed on to a letter to the Commissioners of the BACP and the Department of Aviation to express their grave concerns about the city's rush to provide Uber airport access while ignoring the reforms that would help Chicago's cab drivers passed over a year ago, yet still not implemented.
